He flew in geosynchronous orbit above New York. The vacuum of space tugged at his body. The sun tried to sear his skin. Radiation attempted to pass through him. But his superhuman body persisted, immune to the hostile environment in a way that scientists struggled to explain.
âHave I gone too far?
âThe crater could be seen from space, especially at night. A system of interconnecting lights sprawled across the eastern coast until a certain point.
To a void of darkness where eight million people once worked and lived.
No. I did what was necessary.
What is eight million in a world of 6 billion?
There will be sacrifices.
Only those who believe, who are worthy, will see it to the end. To my utopia.
âHe tightened his grip, making a fist with enough force to crush any known material.
âIâve failed them.
It should have been like this from the start. With me in control. Now these people are poisoned with deviant notions, willing to die for foolish ideals of a freedom none of them possess. Their governments have lied to them too well. Too effectively. They are all nothing more than slaves.
âBut I can make this right. I can free them. It might get ugly, like New York, but I can not convince the world to accept my rule by politely asking.
âHe pushed with his Power, sending himself further along in orbit, heading eastâfrom a certain point of view.
âArtificial satellites and space stations made use of sophisticated computers to maintain their orbit in incredibly precise ways.
âFor him, he had to eyeball it.
âWithout a concern of fuel and with unlimited âthrust,â he placed himself where he wanted, keeping the planet a certain distance away from him as he moved.
âEurope and Africa appeared directly in front of himâor below him, as some might say.
âThen Asia.
âHe drifted, no longer using his power of flight.
âJapan and Australia started to rotate away, the grand Pacific Ocean dominating his view.
âThen the Americas.
âHe had let his mind go blank, entering a sort of meditation.
âBut then the crater appeared below him.
âHe activated his Power, and the cycle picked up its pace.
âWhat had taken almost an hour turned into minutes, his speed ever spiraling him further away from the planet, forcing himself to fly toward it to maintain orbit.
âThe Americas. The crater. Europe and Africa. Asia. Australia.
âAgain.
âHe drove himself faster.
âThe cycle repeated, now only a minute.
âHis jaw tightened, clenched.
âFaster.
âMinutes turned to seconds.
âThe green, whites, browns, and blues of the planet began to blur.
âThis infernal planet. Why does it resist me? They should all bow to my authority without hesitation! They should be gleeful at the opportunity I can provide them!
âHe grit his teeth, closed his eyes, and pushed his speed to the max, losing control of his orbit.
âHe flung into space at a rate likely a considerable fraction of the speed of light, if not faster knowing how his Power defied physics.
âIn a single instant, he stopped himself.
âThe darkness of space surrounded him, encroached in on him. Tendrils of darkness seemed to caress every inch of his body, sending a shiver down his spine.
